SUMMARY:Scholar in Residence With Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin
DESCRIPTION:“On Israel\, Zionism\, and the Jewish People”\nPlease register to attend Scholar-In-Residence in-person here: https://hnt.wufoo.com/forms/x1grfhhb0m9p21e/ \nAll sessions will be live-streamed via h-nt.org/youtube. \nPlease note that times and meal offerings have been updated since first publicized. \nFriday\, April 1st\n6:00 PM – 6:45 PM Friday Night Services\nPlease join us for dinner as Rabbi Herber’s guest (register below) following services.\n7:45 PM Presentation: “The Z Word: Israel Without Apology.” What is it about Israel and Zionism that is so troublesome\, to so many people? Israel was supposed to be the great Jewish unifier. Why is it the source of so much discord within the American Jewish community? A candid conversation about the many narratives that comprise the Israel conversation today. \nSaturday\, April 2nd\n10:00 AM – 12:15 PM Saturday Morning Shabbat Services\nSermon: “American Jews are from Mars; Israeli Jews are from Venus.” You know how siblings can be very different from each other? That’s American Jews and Israel. Why are we so different\, and how can we still sit together at the same family table?\n12:15 PM – 1:00 PM Kiddush Lunch\n1:00 PM – 1:45 PM Presentation: “The Oldest Ism.” Anti-Semitism is alive and well in many places. Why? What is it about the Jews – and Judaism – that arouses so many strong feelings? How does Antisemitism present itself – in subtle and unsubtle ways? \nSunday\, April 3rd\nPlease join us for brunch as Rabbi Herber’s guest (register below).\n10:00 AM Brunch\n10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Presentation:  “Some Of Our Best Friends” Jewish history is more than “they hated us; they tried to kill us; we won; let’s eat!” In every age\, there have been gentiles who have nourished and nurtured Jewish life – and Jewish lives. \nAbout Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin \nWith the regular appearance of his award-winning blog\, “Martini Judaism: for those who want to be shaken and stirred\,” published by the Religion News Service\, Jeffrey Salkin has risen to the forefront of being one of American Judaism’s most prolific and most-quoted rabbis and thought leaders. \nEver since his first book\, Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim The Spiritual Meaning of Your Child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah (Jewish Lights Publishing)\, Rabbi Salkin has been known for his writing\, teaching and activism. His books are on such subjects as making Jewish ritual meaningful; struggling with the meaning of masculinity in today’s world; interpreting Israel and Zionism to Jews and non-Jews; and the task of reclaiming Judaism’s central role as a takes-no-prisoners\, speak-truth-to-power-and-culture religious tradition. \nBecause of his national reputation as an American Jewish thought leader\, the Chautauqua Institution\, America’s iconic educational and cultural community\, invited Rabbi Salkin to deliver the keynote address for its week on religion\, in summer\, 2020. \nRabbi Salkin’s essays have appeared in the Washington Post\, The Huffington Post\, Tablet\, Mosaic\, Forward\, and JTA. He has discussed the American political scene on CNN and the BBC. He has contributed articles to scholarly journals. Several of his books have won national awards. \nHis colleagues have described him as “courageous\,” “always relevant\,” and “one of American Judaism’s true public intellectuals.” \nRabbi Salkin serves as the rabbi of Temple Israel in West Palm Beach\, Florida. His hobbies include playing guitar\, reading voraciously\, and consuming vast quantities of coffee.
