SUMMARY:Chevraya 2020: A Jewish Learning Journey
DESCRIPTION:Co-led by Rabbi Samuel Klein and Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum \nMonthly Sunday mornings ● 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Zoom\nCost: $75 per person \nChevraya 2: Learning Together\nMitzrayim and Meitzarim: Inner and Outer Transformation in the Book of Exodus \nIn the Jewish Tradition\, there is an intimate connection between overcoming external oppression (exodus from Egypt/Mitzrayim) and overcoming internal obstacles (Meitzarim/anything which constrains us emotionally\, intellectually\, or spiritually). Covid-19 has imposed on us both external restrictions and an inner feeling of being confined by outer realities. And to achieve a society of racial equity we need both a change of behavior and a transformation of attitudes. \nIn our study of Exodus\, we are going to explore the relationship between tikkun olam/changing the world and tikkun atzmi/changing ourselves. Among the topics we will discuss are:\n• What is the nature of slavery and freedom?\n• What is “Egypt” in our lives?\n• When is subversion of authority necessary for growth and when does it lead to chaos?\n• What guidance can Exodus offer us in the tumultuous times in which we live? \nSign up at: https://hnt.wufoo.com/forms/chevraya-2020-a-jewish-learning-journey/ \nThis Week’s Topic:\nThe Mishkan & Shabbat : Freedom and Structure – May 16

SUMMARY:Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Rabbi Jacob Herber\nEvery other Wednesday ● 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM ● via Zoom \nJoin Rabbi Herber for Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism\, The Shalom Hartman Institute’s latest curricular project\, which offers a sophisticated yet accessible introduction to philosophical ideas in Jewish peoplehood\, practice\, faith\, and ethics. Within these four rubrics we will explore the following questions: \nPeoplehood\nExplores questions related to the collective experience of Jewish life: What does it mean to be part of the Jewish community? To what extent can communities hold diverse and shared values at the same time? What does Jewish Peoplehood mean today\, when the centers of Jewish life\, North America and Israel\, are so different and independent from one another? \nFaith\nExplores questions related to what a relationship in God and a life of faith entails: Where does faith come from? What are the models in Jewish tradition for a complex relationship with God which includes reverence and joy\, but also anger and argument? Where does doubt fit into a life of faith? Where do Jews who do not believe fit in? \nPractice\nExplores questions that are fundamental to Jewish practice: What is the system of mitzvot trying to accomplish? Why the need for ritual action beyond belief? How have Jewish thinkers conceived of the meaning of mitzvot in an age of radical human autonomy? \nEthics\nExplores questions related to ethical obligation and decision-making: How has Jewish tradition conceived of what we owe other people? How might we approach ethical dilemmas which test our loyalties to values and to people? \nRegister at https://hnt.wufoo.com/forms/foundations-for-a-thoughtful-judaism

SUMMARY:Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day? New Ways of Imagining God
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum\nMonday nights\, October 25\, November 1\, 8\, 15\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM via Zoom\nRegister at https://hnt.wufoo.com/forms/shall-i-compare-thee-to-a-summeras-day/ \nHow do we describe the indescribable? We will explore the connection between the difficulty of describing God and the challenge of articulating our own deepest and most moving life experiences.  In the process\, we will learn what Shakespeare and the Rabbis taught us about God’s uncontainability and our own. \nAmong the questions we will explore: \n\nWhy does it matter how we describe God?\nWhat are the human experiences we have that we find difficult to capture in words?\nWhat are the dangers of describing people inadequately\, and what does this have to do with God?\nWhat do great art and music have to teach us about Jewish spirituality?\nWhat is the connection between God and the release of human potential?\n\n
