SUMMARY:God Talk Session #1
DESCRIPTION:A Series on God for Skeptics and Believers\nWith Rabbi Rosenbaum after Shabbat services \nSession One: April 14\nPrayer Without God\nHow discussing the purpose of prayer without referencing God can actually lead us to an understanding of God. \nEvery year\, Nance Adler at JDS invites me to give one of the series of God Talks to her eighth graders. It occurred to me that this would be a valuable experience for adults\, too. So\, at Shabbat services on April 14\, May 5\, and August 4\, I will be giving a series of three God Talks after services. \nHere is how it will work. Services will go from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM without a dvar Torah. At noon\, we’ll have 15 minutes to get our food at the Kiddush table and come back to our seats for a 30 minute study session on God. “Prayer Without God” will be the April 14 topic. \nSo\, why would I choose to begin a series of God Talks with a session entitled “Prayer Without God”? My experience has taught me that when speaking about prayer\, strange as it may seem\, discussing God is best left to the end. In fact\, it can be very useful to imagine what the experience of saying the words of the prayerbook might be like if we were to temporarily remove God from the picture. After all\, today we are very familiar with spiritual practices that do not depend on God at all\, like yoga and meditation. \nThese practices have well defined goals. They relieve stress\, they center us\, and they help us to experience our day less impulsively\, more mindfully. Ask a meditator what she hopes to achieve and she will tell you how useful her spiritual practice is. But ask ‘is what use is daily prayer?’ and many of us will draw a blank. \nSo\, what are the goals of prayer? How might saying the specific words of our prayer book be useful to us in the way we experience our day? Come on April 14\, and we will talk about that! And\, we may just find that answering this question will lead us to a deeper understanding of God. \nRabbi Jay Rosenbaum

SUMMARY:Israel Civil Discourse Series
DESCRIPTION:Opening Session\nSunday\, April 8\, Dinner: 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM\, Session: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM \nTwo Wednesday Evening Sessions\nWednesdays\, April 11 & 18\, Dinner: 6:15 PM – 7:00 PM\, Session: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM \nClick here to sign up!\nFee: $50 for the series (including all dinners) \nWe live in an increasingly polarized society. Across America\, friends and family have stopped speaking with each other over political differences. In the American Jewish community\, Israel once galvanized and united us. In recent years\, Israel has been a source of increasingly contentious debate among us. Jews have always disagreed about important moral issues. This is our strength. But\, lately\, the disagreements about Israel have become intensely personal and increasingly destructive. We live in an increasingly polarized society. \nHow can we change the level of our discussion? In this series\, we invite members of our community from across the political spectrum to discuss our feelings about Israel in an atmosphere of mutual respect. We will focus not only on the content of what we believe\, but on the process of how we can learn to speak more civilly to each other and listen more openly.\nOur goals are to increase our empathy for one another\, to identify common ground where we can work together and to strengthen our community by learning that there is value in understanding each other more deeply even if it doesn’t lead to agreement. \nAmong the questions we will explore: \n• What does Israel mean to us? \n• When we think about Israel today: What inspires us? What are we most proud of? What concerns us? \n• What is the nature of the conflict between Israel and its neighbors? \n• What are the boundaries of legitimate criticism of Israel within the American Jewish community? \n• How should we respond to criticism of Israel from outside the Jewish community? \n• What would we like Israel’s future to look like? What gives us hope?

SUMMARY:Israel’s African Migrant Crisis Guest Speakers
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speakers: Oded Oron & Yikealo Beyene \nWhen the Israeli government planned to deport 40\,000 African migrants\, El Al pilots said they would refuse to fly them out of the country. A compromise was reached to allow 16\,000 migrants to find temporary shelter in Israel. But\, Prime Minister Netanyahu cancelled the plan hours later in response to public pressure. What is the right thing to do? Join us to hear two experts. \nYikealo Beyene\, originally from Eritrea\, was a refugee in Israel for eight years. He pursued an advanced degree in Israel despite enormous legal and financial obstacles. During and after his studies\, he was active in the asylum seeker and refugee community. \nOded Oron is a Tel Aviv born journalist currently studying at the University of Washington. His research focuses on the mobilization of irregular migrants such as guest workers\, undocumented migrants\, asylum seekers and refugees. His dissertation compares African migrants mobilizing in Israel with migrant movements in WA state.
