SUMMARY:S'lichot Film\, Discussion & Service
DESCRIPTION:This special program\, featuring a discussion led by Rabbi Rosenbaum\, is designed to get us ready for the High Holidays by deepening our connection to others as well as to God. S’lichot services will follow the film screening of Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy. This PBS documentary examines the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical. The film showcases the work of Irving Berlin\, George and Ira Gershwin\, Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein\, Leonard Bernstein\, Stephen Sondheim and more. Along the way\, it raised provocative questions about Jewish identity: \n\nWhy is the Broadway musical a Jewish creation?\nWhy did Jews tell stories about other ethnic groups like “Oklahoma”?\nWhat about the Jewish story had universal appeal?\nWhat Jewish sensibilities did Jews bring to America’s image of itself?\nWhat light does the success of Jews on Broadway shed on the immigrant experience today?\n\nCome join us for a trip down memory lane\, and provocative discussion!

SUMMARY:Tuning In To Our Inner Shofar
DESCRIPTION:With Rabbi Rosenbaum & Lisa Fain. Part I: Learning to Listen More Mindfully to Ourselves & Others\nTuesday\, September 12\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nOR Sunday\, September 24\, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM \nClick here to register\nThe most striking moment of the High Holiday service is the blowing of the shofar. Perhaps thatÕs because each of us has an inner shofar. Each of us has an inner tekiah Ð an unarticulated sound that wants to come out into the world in more articulate form. We each want to be seen and heard by the world for who we most authentically are. But\, it can be a struggle to get from our tekiah to our teruah Ð from a general sense of who we want to be to a clear articulation of our best self. This workshop will provide a road map to help us make that journey and thus add meaning to our High Holiday experience. Through text study\, discussion and role playing exercises\, we will explore the following questions:\nWhat are our greatest personal strengths? What is it about us that we most want people to see and appreciate?\n¥ When were we not seen by others as expressing our greatest\nstrengths? How can we actualize our strengths in the future? How can we use our best talents in new ways this year?\n¥ How can we help other people to shine? Who are the unheard in our world and in our lives and how can we hear and respond to their shofar call?\nWe will come away with a set of very specific daily exercises for boosting listening skills\, enabling us to be in touch with the best part of ourselves and enhancing our curiosity and openness to others around us.\nPart II: Tuning Up for the New Year: The Art of Possibility\, Tuesday\, October 10\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nWe will be reviewing the material we covered on identifying our strengths and using them in new ways at our first workshop\, Tuning in to Your Inner Shofar. This session will focus on identifying dormant potential in ourselves and others. Through text\, music\, and video\, we will explore these questions: \n¥ When did we see something good in another person that we didnÕt notice initially?\n¥ When did someone see potential in us and offer us encouragement that helped us?\n¥ How can we use our existing strengths to create new possibilities for ourselves and others in the coming year? \nRabbi Irwin Kula of Clal and Dr. Neal Mayerson of the Via Institute on Character will join us in conversation through Skype.

SUMMARY:The Bible’s Big Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum\, Sundays\, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM\, Skolnick Board Room\nSept. 11\, 18; Oct. 30; Nov. 6\, 13\, 20; Dec. 4\, 11\, 18; Jan. 8\, 15\, 22; Feb. 5\, 19\, 26; Mar. 5\, 12 (10:30 AM – 11:30 AM due to Purim Megillah reading)\, 19; Apr. 2\, 16\, 23\, 30; May 7\, 14; June 4\, 11\nClick for registration and details. \nThis class is open to everyone in the congregation\, whether or not you are participating in the Reading the Whole Bible project. \nThe Bible is the basis of everything Jewish. There is so much in it: melodramatic stories that would make the writers of Game of Thrones blush\, law\, poetry\, parables\, prayers. How do we make sense of it all?  Join us as we study the Bible at a level of depth and intensity that will enlighten and enchant you. Among the many questions we will consider: \n\nWho wrote the Bible? What did our ancestors think? Why do modern scholars differ?\nHow do Jews study the Bible? What are the kinds of questions Jews ask when we study the Bible? How can an in depth study of the Bible give us an understanding of the evolution of Jewish thought and belief over 3000 years?\nHow do Christians and Muslims understand the Bible differently than we do?\nWhat does the Bible have to say to us? What does the Bible have to teach us about God\, human psychology and the meaning of it all?\n\nThis class is recommended for conversion students. Click for registration and details.
