SUMMARY:Siyyum Following Fast of the Firstborn
DESCRIPTION:Since the firstborn of the Egyptians died so that our ancestors could get free from Egypt\, there is a custom that Jewish first-born children\nfast as a sign gratitude that we weren’t killed. The fast of the firstborn is marked starting at sunrise on the day of the seder and continues\nuntil sundown. However\, if you’re a firstborn you can be exempted from the requirement to fast by attending a seudat mitzvah\, a “mitzvah\nmeal.” We will hold a siyyum\, the completion of a tractate of learning\, on that morning (Friday\, April 15) following our streamed morning\nminyan. Join us for a last pre-Passover bagel and l’hayim before Passover whether you’re fasting or not.

SUMMARY:Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Rabbi Jacob Herber\nEvery other Wednesday ● 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM ● via Zoom \nJoin Rabbi Herber for Foundations for a Thoughtful Judaism\, The Shalom Hartman Institute’s latest curricular project\, which offers a sophisticated yet accessible introduction to philosophical ideas in Jewish peoplehood\, practice\, faith\, and ethics. Within these four rubrics we will explore the following questions: \nPeoplehood\nExplores questions related to the collective experience of Jewish life: What does it mean to be part of the Jewish community? To what extent can communities hold diverse and shared values at the same time? What does Jewish Peoplehood mean today\, when the centers of Jewish life\, North America and Israel\, are so different and independent from one another? \nFaith\nExplores questions related to what a relationship in God and a life of faith entails: Where does faith come from? What are the models in Jewish tradition for a complex relationship with God which includes reverence and joy\, but also anger and argument? Where does doubt fit into a life of faith? Where do Jews who do not believe fit in? \nPractice\nExplores questions that are fundamental to Jewish practice: What is the system of mitzvot trying to accomplish? Why the need for ritual action beyond belief? How have Jewish thinkers conceived of the meaning of mitzvot in an age of radical human autonomy? \nEthics\nExplores questions related to ethical obligation and decision-making: How has Jewish tradition conceived of what we owe other people? SUMMARY:Cycling Affinity Group Ride
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the HNT Cycling Affinity Group’s inaugural ride co-organized by Jeff Kay and myself. Our rides for the first few months will be the first Sunday of the month beginning in April. This is casual and social so we won’t be racing and won’t drop riders. Jeff and/or I plan to be around for each ride. If only one of us can join any given month\, we will likely ask a volunteer participant to ride sweep (last in the group) to ensure that we don’t leave anybody behind. \nThe first ride will be a lap around Mercer Island beginning from HNT at 10am on 4/3. If you want a little longer ride (or a lot longer ride depending on where you live 😊) you are certainly welcome to ride to HNT from home. Please register for the ride here. \nIf the weather forecast & evidence are much more than light drizzle\, we will not hold the ride. I will send an email to all who registered at 8am the morning of the ride if it is cancelled due to weather. \nFinally\, this is a social group ride. Helmets are mandatory and other than that\, you are accepting responsibility and risk for your own safety and bicycling capabilities by joining the ride. HNT\, Jeff and Steve do not accept liability for any incidents or injuries that may occur while you are out riding your own bike with our group. \nI’m looking forward to riding together. \nSteve Luper
