SUMMARY:Can We Talk? An Experiment in Civil Discourse
DESCRIPTION:Register at h-nt.org/CD \nFocus: Immigration and Refugees \nOur nation is deeply divided politically and it has become very personal. Family members have stopped speaking over political differences. Our tradition offers a creative alternative path. The Jewish model of machloket l’shem shamayim/an argument for the sake of heaven is a way for people to disagree passionately in an atmosphere of mutual respect. In this series\, we aim to apply this ancient Jewish method to the current American political divide. Through personal storytelling\, role playing exercises\, and in depth analysis of classical Jewish texts\, we will be exploring the key Jewish and American ethical values that underlie the full range of political positions on the issues of immigration and refugees.Among the questions we will consider: \n\nHow do our own personal stories shape the way we see the world morally?\nWhat are our moral hot buttons\, and where do those passions come from?\nHow do we navigate the creative tension between the collapsing of boundaries and the drawing of boundaries?\nWhen is crossing boundaries a Jewish value? What moral boundaries are sacrosanct to us? How are the values of boundary drawing/crossing relevant to where we stand on immigrants and refugees?\nWhat is the range of Jewish attitudes on The Other? When do we identify with The Outsider and when do we see her as a threat?\nDo we see our encounter with the non-Jewish world as a source of enrichment or danger?\n\nCome join us for a thoughtful and mind-expanding series! \nOpening Session\, with Rabbi Amy Eilberg: Sunday\, October 22 • Dinner: 5:00 PM\, Session: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM \nFive Wednesday Night Sessions\, with Rabbi Rosenbaum\, Dr. Mark Jones\, and John Hale: Wednesdays\, November 1\, 8\, 15\, 29 & December 6\, Dinner: 6:15 PM\, Session: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM \nFee: $150 for the series (including all dinners) \nRegister at h-nt.org/CD

SUMMARY:Packing Party for Refugee Families
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Family Service has 103 clients overseas who have already been extensively vetted and are awaiting resettlement in the US. These families are fleeing inhumane situations in their countries of origin\, and come to the US without the basic household items to begin life in a new country. HNT is helping a minimum of 10 families by providing a full household\, including kitchen\, bedroom\, bathroom\, and general household items upon arrival.\n\n\n\n\nHow you can help:\n\n1. Throw a ‘Buy It to Bayit’ Party: Invite friends to bring items to your home on the date of your choosing to pack boxes full of all of the items needed for a complete household OR a kitchen\, bathroom\, bedroom\, or miscellaneous household items. Staff guidance provided. Bayit is Hebrew for home\, and we appreciate you opening yours to provide for someone else’s. Email Rebecca@h-nt.org if you are interested.\n\n2. Rally Your Circle to Sponsor a Family: No party supplies needed – send emails and make calls to your friends and family asking for their help to purchase items needed. Staff guidance provided. All items should be shipped to/dropped off at HNT by Sunday\, November 19. Email Rebecca@h-nt.org if you are interested.\n\n3. Purchase Items to Donate: Visit HNT’s Refugee Wish Lists to see what items are needed. All items must be new. You are welcome to shop directly on Amazon OR purchase items at the store of your choice and mark them on our Wish List where it says “Buying this gift elsewhere?” so we have an accurate count of what is still needed. Items can be shipped to/dropped off at HNT in the office through November 13.\n\n4. Volunteer Your Time on Sunday\, November 19: \nBeginning at 10:00 AM\, we need volunteers to help pack all of the donated items into boxes by category\, and deliver them to JFS in Seattle. Click to RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Endless Opportunities: Drawing Together to Improve Our Quality of Life
DESCRIPTION:Remember when you were a kid and a piece of paper and a crayon was all it took for you to draw away like an artist? \nWell\, it turns out that power stays with us\, even if we constantly squish it down with our own self- criticism. What’s WONDERFUL is that we can release that amazing skill and use visuals in our everyday lives. Join us as we play with drawing – as a group and individually – to explore how our informal sketches and doodles can improve our quality of life.\nCome ready to draw\, leave your inner critic at the door\, and know you have ALL the talent you need right inside of you.
