SUMMARY:First Class: Traditionally Radical Talmud
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays beginning October 16\, 7:00 PM\nTaught by Rabbi Miriam Green\nFor generations\, Talmud was a collection of Jewish text that was closed to all but the most knowledgeable insiders. Yet this view strays far from the Talmud’s original roots. The rabbis of the Talmud strove to navigate their shattered world following the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem\, when things had changed so drastically that a traditional approach no longer worked. They needed to re-imagine and re-invent Jewish tradition within their new reality. Learning Talmud can help us capture this radically innovative spirit and inspire us to work to repair our own world. Following the teachings of Rabbi Benay Lappe\, this class will equip its learners with svara (moral intuition) and gemara (learning) and prepare us to be changemakers for good in the Jewish community and in the world at large. This course is part of a congregational initiative to make Talmud\, a fascinating and challenging Jewish text\, accessible to all. Our year-long study will culminate with a siyyum (traditional celebration) before Passover. \nRegister at https://hnt.wufoo.com/forms/s1vvmmhl0fo25ck/

SUMMARY:JFS' “Crime After Crime” Film Screening and Panel
DESCRIPTION:The Troubled Intersection of Domestic Violence & the Justice System \nDeborah Peagler experienced years of abuse by a violent boyfriend before being sentenced to life in prison for his murder. “Crime After Crime\,” a Sundance Film Festival documentary\, amplifies the stories of women\, like Deborah\, who survived domestic abuse only to be re-victimized by the U.S. judicial system. Through the voices of Deborah and her attorneys — one of whom is an Orthodox Jew channeling his values into his pro bono service — the film shines a light on how public policy\, criminal law\, and civil law intersect and can escalate the violence and deepen the trauma survivors of domestic violence experience. \nJoin Jewish Family Service\, the Coalition Ending Gender-Based Violence\, Stroum Jewish Community Center\, and organizations from across the community for an important and timely screening of “Crime After Crime.” A post-film panel will discuss how we can better understand and reform our systems to provide increased protections for survivors and reduce the compounding trauma that results from relationship-based violence. \nRegister at endgv.nonprofitsoapbox.com/crime-after-crime \nPanelists\nJoshua Safran\, J.D.\, Pro Bono Attorney\, “Crime After Crime”\nTamaso Johnson\, J.D.\, Public Policy Director\, Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence\nMartina Kartman\, J.D.\, Soros Justice Fellow\, Public Defender Association\nTracee Parker\, Psy.D\, Justice for Families Grant Project Manager\, Coalition Ending Gender-Based Violence \nSponsors\nCongregation Beth Shalom\, Herzl-Ner Tamid\, Hillel at the University of Washington and Jconnect\, Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and The Cardozo Society\, Kavana Cooperative\, Seattle Hadassah\, Sephardic Bikur Holim\, Temple Beth Am\, Temple B’nai Torah\, Temple De Hirsch Sinai
