Chevraya 2: Learning Together
Mitzrayim and Meitzarim: Inner and Outer Transformation in the Book of Exodus

In the Jewish Tradition, there is an intimate connection between overcoming external oppression (exodus from Egypt/Mitzrayim) and overcoming internal obstacles (Meitzarim/anything which constrains us emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually). Covid-19 has imposed on us both external restrictions and an inner feeling of being confined by outer realities. And to achieve a society of racial equity we need both a change of behavior and a transformation of attitudes.

In our study of Exodus, we are going to explore the relationship between tikkun olam/changing the world and tikkun atzmi/changing ourselves. Among the topics we will discuss are:
• What is the nature of slavery and freedom?
• What is “Egypt” in our lives?
• When is subversion of authority necessary for growth and when does it lead to chaos?
• What guidance can Exodus offer us in the tumultuous times in which we live?
