Congregational Code Amendment Meeting

Maximizing our property’s potential, creating a bigger sense of community through Jewish partnerships, and fostering a strong financial base have been high priorities for HNT. While still very preliminary, our team has begun some discussions with the Jewish Day School (JDS) about a partnership, which is a promising move toward achieving these priorities. Our discussions with JDS center around allowing them to build their school at the western most part of our property (known as Barnabie Point). We do not know yet know whether this will be allowed by the city because of an inconsistency between the zoning and the comprehensive city plan. To resolve this inconsistency, we submitted a code amendment to the city of Mercer Island. If the code amendment is approved, it does not commit HNT to JDS, but it would allow us to further explore partnering with JDS on our property.
The Mercer Island Planning Commission is holding a hearing this Wednesday, October 27 to start the process, which will be followed by a discussion of the code amendment in December by the Mercer Island City Council.
