S’lichot Film, Discussion & Service

September 16, 2017 @ 8:45 pm - 11:30 pm
Free

This special program, featuring a discussion led by Rabbi Rosenbaum, is designed to get us ready for the High Holidays by deepening our connection to others as well as to God. S’lichot services will follow the film screening of Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy. This PBS documentary examines the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical. The film showcases the work of Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and more. Along the way, it raised provocative questions about Jewish identity:

  • Why is the Broadway musical a Jewish creation?
  • Why did Jews tell stories about other ethnic groups like “Oklahoma”?
  • What about the Jewish story had universal appeal?
  • What Jewish sensibilities did Jews bring to America’s image of itself?
  • What light does the success of Jews on Broadway shed on the immigrant experience today?

Come join us for a trip down memory lane, and provocative discussion!
